DeBI TiRAR MaS FOToS is Bad Bunny’s sixth studio album, entirely written by Benito A. Martinez Ocasio (Bad Bunny himself). This album serves as a love letter to his home, Puerto Rico, blending various musical styles that originated there including salsa, bomba, and dembow. Salsa hails from Cuba, bomba is native to Puerto Rico, and dembow comes from the Dominican Republic.
Key tracks that showcase these styles are “NUEVAYoL,” which uses dembow, “BAILE INoLVIDABLE,” with salsa influences, and “CAFe CON RON,” which incorporates bomba. Yet this album isn’t just about musical styles, it tells one of the saddest stories I’ve heard in a while. The journey starts with the upbeat “NUEVAYoL,” yet as the album progresses, the mood shifts dramatically. A track like “PIToRRO DE COCO” dives into the pain of feeling lonely during Christmas. Overall, the album takes you through emotional highs and lows, creating a powerful emotional rollercoaster.
As a Spanish speaker, listening to this album moved me to tears, especially songs like “LO QUE LE PASO A HAWAii.” The track’s message about resisting Puerto Rico’s gentrification and its transformation into a tourist destination hit me deeply. It resonated with me personally because I’ve seen similar impacts on my family in Mexico, where rising costs due to tourism have become a growing concern.
At its core, this album is a beautifully crafted exploration of love, loss, and the sense of home. The lyrics are poignant, the beats are thoughtfully chosen, and the flow from track to track is seamless. I couldn’t recommend this album enough to anyone who wants to experience a heartfelt story about the loss of a lover, the erosion of a homeland, and the emotional journey of regaining a sense of belonging. I’d rate it a 10/10; it’s a must listen.
