The Umbrella Dance has been an expressive form of Chinese culture for approximately 3000 years. The dance symbolizes grace and beauty while celebrating Chinese culture and heritage. Here at Renton High School, we celebrate our students’ cultures by annually coming together and showcasing different dances and clothing from various cultures. Today, we´ll spotlight one of the ASU´s Umbrella Dance performers, Carolyn Vu.
- Why have you decided to perform at this year’s multicultural performance?
“I wanted to do it because I like learning about other people’s cultures and experiencing their traditions for myself, and I also can help teach other people in the future if I join the ASU.”
- Do you feel like your culture is represented at Renton High School? If yes, then how? If not, then what are things we could do to represent it?
“I think my culture is represented here because we have dances included in multi, specifically shown through the fan dance. “
- What are your favorite parts of being a multicultural dancer?
“Dancing in front of an audience knowing that people are enjoying the performance itself makes me feel good. The people also because you have to learn how to collaborate with them and make sure everyone is incorporated, and through that, I’ve learned many skills, met new people, and made great memories.”
- What does your schedule look like while juggling classes and rehearsing for your performances?
“It’s kind of busy because I do not have that much time to myself anymore. After school, I have to go to the IPAC or upstairs to practice, but other than that, it’s not that bad.”
- What dances have you chosen to do and why?
“I chose to do the Umbrella Dance because I found it simple and I wanted to start with a simple dance, instead of it being complicated and taking up all of my time for my first year. ”
- What are the challenges of performing in Multi?
“Probably the people who do not show up to practice and don’t participate in rehearsal.”
- Do you see yourself doing any multicultural performances next year, and why?
“Yes, I do. My friend and I are planning on performing some Cambodian dances next year since the country isn’t represented [yet].”
At Renton High School, students have come together to create a vibrant community by sharing and celebrating their cultures. Through various activities and events, they express their individual stories while embracing the diverse backgrounds of their peers. This initiative not only fosters understanding, but also strengthens the bonds within our school, making it a truly inclusive environment for everyone!
