What is this phenomenon going on across the world? You may have heard it once or twice, but what are these creepy, cute little creatures hanging on people’s backpacks, bags, and wallets?
The Labubu is a plushie some may see as cute with a sinister smile that was created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, who made his debut in 2015 for the start of the Labubus alongside the many more characters he makes.
Kasing Lung found inspiration from Nordic Mythology, and during that time he released another set of monsters with the names Zimono, Tycoco, Spooky, and Pato. Usually, people mix up Zimono and Labubu, but the only difference is that the Zimono has a tail and the Labubu doesn’t.
Why are Labubus so popular and selling out everywhere?
People buy Labubus to revive their inner child and buy collectibles to fulfill their joy by looking at his adorable, devilish-looking animal. Furthermore, K-pop idol and Blackpink member Lisa Manobal posted herself with her own giant Labubu on her Instagram story in April 2024.
Many people started buying them after Lisa posted them and the rates of Labubus sales skyrocketed.
Many Singaporeans followed Lisa’s lead on the hype. Last year, on August 23rd- 25th, 2024, during a live Pop Toy Show at Marina Bay Sands Singapore, fans of the Labubu doll fought for the limited-edition Labubu toys so badly that the police had to be called to the event.
The creativity of Labubu!
The way these little dolls look has never been done before, which gives them that original clean look. The design of the Labubu gives its unique tone when you see it because of the silly, playful looking manner it gives off. In addition, Labubu has many varieties that come in different styles and themes of goofy, silly collaborations with brands you didn’t even know that they would collaborate with.
One collaboration that sparked interest was the Spongebob x Monsters collab which was released on April 30th, 2021.
