What happened?
An earthquake is an unexpected shake of the earth’s surface caused by released energy within the outer part of the earth, which moves the tectonic plates.
An earthquake struck on March 28, 2025, at 12:50:52 (06:20:52 UTC) in Myanmar and Thailand. The earthquake was originally in Myanmar but then traveled around Myanmar regions to Thailand. Thailand’s capital is a large city known for its lively and energetic street life. The 30-story building is the only building built in the Thailand capital until after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, killing at least 10 people and leaving others unaccounted for. The building collapsed because the Thai people had joined forces with the Chinese to build it and the steel frames they provided were too weak, which could not support the 34 floors. “The pillars on the third floor – where I stood and looked back – the pieces did not fall apart. They fell apart because the metal inside was crushed,” stated Netiphong Phatthong, a lucky electrician who escaped, as he waited for news of his missing friends. Apichat Chaihlao, who worked on the eighth floor, said his manager was so worried that he measured the columns himself “and he was right that these columns were not solid,” Apichat said, “I didn’t pay much attention at the time, but now with other projects I’ve worked on, that floor doesn’t look solid.”

What can we do?
Two ways to lend a helping hand to Myanmar and Thailand (Bangkok) is to spread awareness of the difficult situation they are facing. Another way is to donate to organizations. Right now, hospitals are overwhelmed because there are so many people are in need of treatment due to the conditions after the earthquake. Some hospitals have collapsed, so patients are getting treated outside, and water has gone filthy which is causing more diseases. The hospitals have limited resources and limited treatments for people that need help.
