On Sunday afternoon, June 1st, 2025, a small plane crashed into Lake Washington just after it skidded off of the Renton Municipal Airport runway. The pilot and passenger got out of the plane and are fine after they slid into Lake Washington in the aircraft at the north end of the Renton Municipal Airport close to Perimeter Road, said Information Officer Meeghan Black from the Renton Police. At approximately 4:15 pm, a fire truck from Boeing and a large tow truck with a crane came to get the plane out of Lake Washington. They don’t know what caused the plane to crash into the water, but the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration know about it and are continuing to investigate. Before the crash, the police said that the pilot stated she was on a training flight, and she was practicing emergency landings before crashing the plane into Lake Washington. Naama Shepard, a nearby neighbor who witnessed the crash said, “Well, it was strange. This is the only one I’ve heard of here. And I understand the two people in the plane got out.” The representatives with the Environmental Protection Agency were notified to come out to the scene to make sure there was no leakage of toxic materials in or near Lake Washington, but the Washington Department of Ecology stated that about five gallons of gasoline spilled into the water.
