Musings on social issues: a student perspective

My thoughts and questions on gun control

Samantha Craven, Staff Writer

It seems that gun violence threats are streaming in constantly.

Given recent threats made towards Lincoln High School and Truman Middle School, as well as other alarms throughout the country, people are in a state of fear.

This fear spreads rapidly through social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and the recent posting on Snapchat with a kid showing the gun that was going to be used in a preeminent shooting.

There have been many reports involving kids having firearms in the last couple of weeks all over the U.S.  with 5 reported incidents in Washington alone.

The question we are all asking now is:

“What are we doing about it?!?”

Upping background checks and age limits, will these really be effective methods?

Why are we leaving guns around where teens can get ahold of them?

We need to stop this now!!! STOP leaving firearms around; you never know whose life is in danger.

Given the number of shootings and deaths that there have been in the U.S. over the years, what is the appropriate way to handle the situation?

President Trump says arming our school staff, upping the background check and age limit are some of the possible solutions. However, other people feel that giving staff concealed weapons could have unimaginable consequences, even resulting in death.

While solutions in response to this issue are still being analyzed, please be aware that just because you lock up or hide your firearm doesn’t mean it’s not accessible to someone.
