Firefighter challenge at Renton High School

Renton High School hosted a fire fighter challenge where students had to get through an obstacle course while wearing all of the fireman gear, such as gloves, jackets, backpacks, oxygen tanks, and helmets in as little time as possible.

The course was very rigorous.

In the first section, students had to carry two first aid kits that weighed 25 pounds each and run approximately 50 meters.

Then, each student had to run up and down stairs multiple times while carrying a water hose.

In the next challenge, the students had to run to a metal beam and move it by striking it with a sledge hammer.

The final obstacle was to carry a test dummy around a cone and back to the starting position.

The students had resting periods between challenges where they did not have to carry materials, but had to continue moving around.

“I mainly did it because it seemed fun and Mr.Willecke told my class about how we were competing with other schools,” Senior Michael Bui says. “It was kind of easy because I don’t push myself. I didn’t rush or anything because I was the first one to do the challenge so I just paced myself .”

The challenge simulated the real life obstacles that firefighters have to deal with on the job. Renton High School had 21 participants who all completed the challenge with passing scores. The fire fighters said RHS was the best school they have been at. All students were respectful, gave best efforts and cheered on their peers.
