Georgia football fatality

On Sunday, a student from Pike County High School (PCHS) in Georgia was declared dead.

Dylan Thomas was 16, a 4.0 student, and #32 on the PCHS football field. His football team linked arms on Sunday and carried Thomas’s jersey onto the field and joined many other fans in prayer.

Thomas had been taken off the field somewhere in the 3rd quarter after he had been tackled in the 2nd. After he was taken off, he claimed that he could not feel his body, then passed out and fell off the bench.

After being taken to the hospital, he was said to have severe swelling on his brain and was put into a medically induced coma in efforts to keep him alive.

Thomas’s death impacted the small Georgia community so greatly. The impact he had on everyone’s lives was tremendous. A 3rd of the students that attend PCHS did not arrive for school the next day, and football practice was cancelled.

Football related injuries are very common, deaths not quite as much but still a high risk. Last year, out of the 4 million people that play organized football, 13 died. Football is obviously the biggest sport in America, even with all its issues and high risks.

Here at Renton High School, players are at such a risk as well. Not knowing what exactly happened to Thomas could affect the way that some people play or watch football, and we should always make sure that we keep watch on our loved ones to make sure that they are staying safe. This means making sure that we are not pushing their needs aside because they do not sound justified. We should listen to everything that anyone has to say because it could really be serious.
