What the future holds for DACA
October 22, 2018
Many people do not know what DACA is or why it is so important. The word DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. It is a relief of deportation for youth immigrants.
DACA is considered an Obama-era program. Children in the program are referred to as “Dreamers”. According to an article from NBC called “What is DACA? What you need to know”, DACA was announced 6 years ago on June 15, 2012. It explains what DACA’s purpose was–which is to help immigrant youth.
President Donald Trump announced, on September 5, 2017, that he wanted to end DACA.
This meant that almost 800,000 dreamers would be at risk of being deported, and they might even lose their work permits if they have them. Thousands of dreamers were at fear to being separated from their families and homes.
Many people had a lot to say about President Trump’s choice of ending DACA.
In an article from PBSO News Hour titled “Trumps decision to end DACA, explained”, people were explaining that they wanted the program to stay.
Bernie Sanders replied saying ending DACA would be “one of the ugliest and cruelest decisions ever made by a president.”
DACA is not going down without a fight. On August 3, 2018, Politico released an article called “Judge orders full restart of DACA program” and it mentions that Judge John Bates “in April became the third federal judge to order the administration to restart renewals for people previously approved for DACA”.
Judge Bates also threatened to cancel the memo to end DACA and restore the full program as President Trump’s officials did not present an adequate reason to end it. This gave the Dreamers some hope of keeping the program running.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that the Justice Department will “take every lawful measure” to defend the decision of taking DACA down.
In the Politico article “Sessions rips judge’s decision to restore DACA program”, it mentions that the Jeff Sessions replied, “The last administration violated its duty to enforce immigration laws by directing and implementing a categorical, multipronged non-enforcement immigration policy for a massive group of illegal aliens.”
What are some reasons people want DACA gone?
States argue that DACA leads to additional cost in health care, law enforcement, and education. They also argue that it leads to more competition for jobs.
Getting rid of DACA, to a lot of people, means losing everything. Some of their lives depend on the program. Dreamers cannot give up hope. People need to keep fighting for the program to stay alive because the program helps thousands of immigrants. DACA’s future relies on the people.
