Girls’ basketball: RHS vs. Orting

On January 11, 2019, the Renton High girls’ basketball team traveled to Orting, Washington to face the Orting Cardinals. It was a long way there and a long way back, but it was all worth it to be able to take all three wins back home.

It all started off with a blow out by the Renton C team girls, with the score of 45-14. These girls worked well together as a team and did a great job on both defense and offense, although there were many interruptions in this game due to fouls from both teams. In the end, they played together as a team to take the 1st win of the night.

The JV came close to losing their undefeated record by 1 point. The JV girls held on to a 1-point lead until the Orting Cardinals came back up in the last 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Because the score was close, the JV coach, Cheatham, put all the starters back in: Kierra Frazier, Emily Hoffart, April Brendan, Mia Jackson, and Sarah Brendan. They pulled it together and scored the winning layup in the last 10 seconds.

Varsity also took home the win after a quick blowout, 60-32. During the first half, Renton girls started off with a good lead of 23-4 and it quickly progressed after half time.

“We did a good job working as a team and passing the ball around. One of our best games yet,” says #24, senior, Tamika Barbee-Welch.

Varsity kept the lead throughout the whole game due to good rotation and communication. The girls secured their 9th win, taking 2nd place in league.
