Bottled water versus tap water

Jakirra McNeal, Staff Writer

According to an article on banthebottle.net Americans consume over 8.6 billion gallons of bottled water.

Tap water is filtered water protected from contaminates and chemicals through a process called filtration. Bottled water is a more comfortable alternative for most in comparison to tap water. On bottledwater.org the bottled water industry is working to reduce its environmental footprint by using lighter weight plastics for containers. The problem is when those bottles are not recycled properly they end up in landfills then in our oceans with wildlife, and humans don’t realize how detrimental it is to the environment.

The article states that some water bottles are filled with tap water, an example being Aquafina, identified in a press article. Plastic water bottles also release toxic chemicals when composed, contributing to global warming soon leading to animal extinction. Bottled water is a convenience to people, it’s cleanliness is guaranteed  to the public through advertisements,  and it can easily be stored and is “safer to drink than tap water” according to greengarageblog.org.

On the other hand tap water can be beneficial for health reasons.

Foodnetwork.net says tap water has calcium, magnesium and fluoride which are all good for healthy teeth and bones. But little did we know even our pipes can contaminate tap water with lead!

With all this in mind the next step should be for consumers to look into more eco friendly options while keeping their health in mind. Yes tap water is less of a convenience than bottled water and yes bottled water does guarantee cleanliness but it all comes down to weighing the pros and cons of both methods and deciding which one is going to be beneficial to both themselves and the environment.
