Shout out to our Black Student Union (BSU) for organizing such a memorable assembly! Our assembly on January 17, 2025, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was created and led by Renton High School’s Black Student Union.

As our BSU prepared for the assembly, they also prepared a presentation, which was to be shown during our school’s advisory time. In the presentation, students were asked to participate in an activity where they were given paper hearts and were expected to write an answer to one or more questions. Questions like, “What is a quote that motivates you?” and “Who inspires you?” Eventually, all of the paper hearts made by students will be put into one collage in the commons of our school. Moreover, BSU put together a video titled “For the Culture.” They asked six RHS students about their dreams and a leader in their community they look up to. They also asked if any of the students could name a civil rights leader, without naming Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In addition, those students answered the question “If you had one thing to say to Dr. MLK, or anyone who lived in the era before integration, what would you say?” Finally, at the end of the video, students shared wonderful and motivating messages to our RHS community. This video is still available to watch, linked below on Renton High School’s BSU Instagram.

The assembly started with students rising to stand for a warm welcoming and a spectacular solo song performance by Aujane Seals. Afterwards, two guest speakers, Carla Robinson and Zena Dodson, took the spotlight to bring attention to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life-long journey along with their own life. They also shared motivation and new perspectives to students because after all, we are the new leaders to come into the ever-changing world. Renton High School’s Step and Dance Team also took the chance to highlight Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s significant impact on our world. Lastly, Renton High School’s Jazz band set an amazing performance that took on an enjoyable tone.

Thank you to BSU for your hard work in creating an assembly that not only celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but also celebrated our school community. Now it’s time to answer one important and urgent question according to Dr. King, “What are you doing for others?”
