You’ve heard of an engineer, but more specifically do you know about civil engineering? There are 4 main engineering branches: civil, chemical, mechanical, and electrical. This article is about the civil engineer career.
Civil engineering focuses on sustainable designs and construction of infrastructure and buildings such as roads, bridges, dams, and many more. They do the planning, designing, consulting, testing, and research to ensure public safety, while focusing on sustainability and environmental impact.
Inside of the civil engineering branch, there are another 4 more specific branches of civil engineering:
- Structural – which focuses on the skeletons of buildings and bridges.
- Geotechnical – engineers who analyze the soil and rock for foundation stability.
- Transportation – does the designing of highways and roads as well as other transit systems.
- Environmental – focuses on places that deal with wastewater, storm water, and flood/drain control.
Some pros of this career are that the job is in high demand and stable because it is necessary for future buildings as well as it is a versatile career path. On the other hand, some cons of this career are the demanding work environment because of tight deadlines on projects and long working hours.
To become a civil engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in engineering. The average annual salary in Washington state is around $106,000 to $112,000, with top earners and senior roles exceeding $150,000 annually.
Although civil engineering is a very competitive job in the job market, it is very rewarding.
