Social media helps teens stay in touch with friends and express themselves, but using it too much can hurt their mental health, sleep, and school performance. Some doctors and experts say setting limits on screen time is important so teens can enjoy social media without it taking over their lives.
Studies show that teens who spend more than three hours a day on apps like TikTok and Instagram are more likely to feel anxious, depressed, or bad about themselves. Recent research also connects problematic or compulsive use with loneliness, constant comparison to others, and body image problems, especially for girls. In national surveys, almost half of U.S teens say social media has a negative impact on people their age, which shows many teens are worried about this too.
Social media also messes with daily life by cutting into sleep, homework, and even what people believe. A Pew Research Center survey found that about 45% of teens say social media hurts how much they sleep, and 40% say it hurts how much they get done. Other studies show that late night scrolling leads to going to bed later, feeling more tired in the day, and doing worse in school. Also, research on apps like Facebook and X shows that a small group of heavy users share a lot of the fake news they see that then spreads the fake news quickly online.
