“Project Hail Mary” directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, is the best sci-fi movie of the year so far. This film is based on Andy Weir’s popular 2021 novel, Project Hail Mary. With Ryan Gosling leading the cast, the movie mixes smart science, big adventure, and real heart.
Imagine a middle school science teacher all alone on a spaceship, with no idea of who you are or what happened. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the riddle of the mysterious substance that is causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.
Released on March 20, 2026, the movie has already pulled in more than $332 million at the box office on a $200 million budget. On IMDb, it’s sitting strong with an 8.3/10 rating.
Gosling carries the film with a physical presence that is both funny and deeply affecting. For long stretches, he’s basically carrying the movie by himself, talking to video logs and solving problems with science and sheer determination. Once he meets Rocky – an alien character (voiced by James Ortiz) – the story turns into something even more special. As reviewer Sam Gassaway wrote in the Baylor Lariat, “The relationship between Ryan Gosling and his alien co-star Rocky is at the very core of this film… I laughed, I cried, I felt suspense, I cheered.”

What I appreciated most is how the film has its balances tone. It feels like a convergence of some of the best science fiction storytelling of the past decade. It has a lot of clever problem solving like “The Martian,” and also has the emotional weight of “Arrival” and “Interstellar,” but it has its own fresh style.
If you love smart sci-fi movies with heart and humor, see this one. “Project Hail Mary” is fun, emotional, and full of wonder. It walks a fine line between humor, tension, and sentimentality. It shows us that one ordinary person can do something extraordinary. As one reviewer said, it “reconnects you with the joy of watching stories unfold on a big screen.” If you want a fun and exciting movie full of deep technical sci-fi experience, see “Project Hail Mary.” It is funny. It is beautiful. It is heartfelt. I highly recommend it.
