We’re Getting Ready for “Red (Taylor’s Version)” So Here are the Explanations (or at least what we know) of the Vault Songs

Angela Vu, Writer

“Red (Taylor’s Version)” is finally coming soon after its awaited release! So in honor of that, here is an article to tell you what we know about the vault songs coming out with the re-recordings. I will not be covering the whole album for this article because that is simply too long. Now, go ahead and start reading information about the vault songs!

Here is the Tracklist:

  1. Better Man [From the Vault]
  2. Nothin’ New (featuring Phoebe Bridgers) [From the Vault]
  3. Babe [From the Vault]
  4. Message In A Bottle [From the Vault]
  5. I Bet You Think About Me (featuring Chris Stapleton) [From the Vault] 27. Forever Winter [From the Vault]
  6. Run (featuring Ed Sheeran) [From the Vault]
  7. The Very First Night [From the Vault]
  8. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) [From the Vault]

For this article, we are only focusing on the songs from the vault.

Better Man:

“Better Man” captures the feelings of getting out of a toxic relationship and beginning to accept the sorrow that will come after the breakup.

“Everybody can identify with the sentiment of this song. A lot of times in life,  there are things that you have to walk away from that don’t necessarily feel like the greatest decision to have to make in your life, but sometimes you just know that it’s time to move on, and no matter how hard that is, you just know down in your heart that it’s time to do that. And those are very difficult decisions that we face sometimes in our lives, and this song talks about that beautifully” (Little Big Town about “Better Man”)  (TSS 2).

Nothin’ New:

“Nothin’ New” features Phoebe Bridgers and it’s about being scared of aging and things changing and losing what you have. It was revealed in the deluxe edition journals for her seventh studio album, “Lover”. Taylor herself stated in the Lover diaries that it’s a really vulnerable song, but it’s important to say.

Babe:

“Babe” is about blaming a cheating lover for ruining a relationship.

“It’s a song that I wrote with Pat Monahan when I was making the RED album.  I’m so happy that it gets its own life. I’m so happy that Sugarland wanted to record it and has done such a good job with it, and I’m so stoked to be able to sing on it, too” (Taylor Swift on Babe) (TSS 1).

“The story behind this is that sometimes I’ll write a song that I absolutely love but  I feel like it doesn’t fit with an album I’ve made, so I hold it back and hope it’ll have its own moment someday, whether it’s me singing it or some other artist. And in this case,  it’s an artist called Sugarland!” (Taylor Swift on giving “Babe” to Sugarland and about songs that she writes but don’t fit into the album she was currently making in general)  (TSS 1).

Message in a Bottle:

Not much is known about “Message in a Bottle” yet except that it was written and recorded by Taylor for 2012’s “Red”. But, we will be hearing it soon when it releases along with all the re-recordings!

I Bet You Think About Me:

Again, not much is known about “I Bet You Think About Me”, except that it is a  song written and recorded by Taylor, featuring American country singer-songwriter Chris  Stapleton!! We will be hearing it very soon though!

Forever Winter:

Following “Message in a Bottle” and “I Bet You Think About Me”, we have never heard of “Forever Winter”. But I guess that is really the point of the vault songs…

Run:

“Run” is a song recorded by Taylor featuring singer-songwriter and friend Ed  Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran revealed to Capital FM in September 2021 that he always preferred the song over “Everything Has Changed“, which is the duet that made it on the original version of the album (1).

“We wrote ‘Run’ and then we wrote ‘Everything Has Changed’ maybe like a week later. And I remember always thinking, ‘Well, ‘Run’ is the one that’s gonna make the  album.’ It was always my favorite. But ‘Everything Has Changed’ just ended up sounding better because we produced them differently or whatever. So ‘Run’ has just been there for years and years. I’ve never really wanted to nudge Taylor about it – because it’s her song.  But I’ve always been secretly hoping that one day she’d be like, ‘Hey, this song was  cool!’ And so we recorded that and it’s really great! I’m so happy it’s seeing the light of day” (Ed Sheeran on “Run”) (1).

The Very First Night:

Like the other vault songs, it was hidden away from the public for a while. So we don’t know the meanings of these songs just yet… we will be hearing “The Very First  Night” for the first time ever on “Red (Taylor’s Version)” release date, November 12th.

All Too Well (10 Minute Version):

“All Too Well” is a song that describes heartache from a devastating break-up.

It was the first song written for “Red”, after a 6-month writing block that came from a hard breakup. She revealed that “All Too Well” was the hardest song to write for the album.

“It took me a really long time to filter through everything I wanted to put in the song without it being a 10-minute song, which you can’t put on an album. I wanted a  story that could work in the form of a song” (Taylor about “All Too Well”) (TSS 1).

We already know a lot about this song because the original has been around for so long that we know how popular it’s been. Some would argue that it is one of Taylor’s finest written songs. It is so popular that she will be releasing the 10-minute version of the song.

Now that, with all my research is all I could find on the vault songs for “Red  (Taylor’s Version)”! I hope some information was found useful or interesting… it definitely was to me. Remember that it is coming out a week earlier than originally planned (thank you very much, Taylor)! So happy (or very sad) listening on November  12th! Enjoy the 13th dedicating it to the re-recordings.
