Hey RedHawkS, many of you are probably thinking of what to do after high school. Let me tell you about being a Criminal Defense Attorney.
A criminal defense attorney is someone who defends a person that committed a crime or is being accused of a crime. To become a criminal defense attorney, you have to go to 4-year college and earn your bachelor’s degree, which can be in anything. During your undergraduate or after you graduate college, you are required to take the LSAT which is the Law School Admission Test that is around 3 hours long and measures reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, and logical reasoning. After you have passed your LSAT, you are ready to apply to law school! You will be able to obtain your Juris Doctorate (J.D.) through the three-year law school program that you choose to attend.
Once you have graduated from law school, you must take the bar exam to get licensed as an attorney (which is only available two times a year). After you pass the bar exam, you’ll need experience. So, you will need to start thinking about where you want to apply, to a criminal defense firm or other firms that practice different defenses like insurance or corporate.
The salary for being a defense attorney averages around $70,000 to $100,000 a year.
Some pros of this career are that it’s a good paying career, it ensures justice, and it’s a respected career, etc. On the other hand, some cons are that it takes a lot of college (which can be very expensive), it can cause stress, and it’s very time consuming.
