Renton High School is excited to welcome our new principal, Drew O’Connell, who brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to our school community! Principal O’Connell has a strong background in educational leadership, having previously served in various school districts. His vision for Renton High School includes fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically and personally. With a commitment to enhancing student engagement and promoting innovative teaching practices, Principal O’Connell is poised to lead Renton High School into a new era of excellence.
Principal O’Connell started his journey into the educational field 19 years ago as a paraprofessional in a summer school program. He worked alongside students who struggled with learning during that school year and he supported those in need during the summer to catch up on their course credits. With his experience in various schools and districts, Principal O’Connell goes into detail about the differences he’s noticed between RHS and other schools. He explains the difference between Hazen and RHS, “Hazen was quite a bit different, it’s a much bigger school, and the demographics are a little bit different just based on where [they] are in the city. Hazen’s attendance area butts up against Bellevue. We just kinda get a different demographic of students there.” RHS is known for our diversity of students, and we are proud of it! We pride ourselves in the inclusivity of students of all different backgrounds. We are exhilarated to know that our efforts are recognized and acknowledged. Principal O’Connell proceeds his sentence by finding similarities with high schools such as Rainier Beach and Garfield with having similar demographics, student size, and beautiful parts of the community. An example being our ML program here at RHS.
I asked our new principal if anything stood out to him as he entered RHS. O’Connell states the pride that the students of RHS have. We as students at Renton High School are proud to embody the example of pride, tradition, and excellence. Principal O’Connell expresses his amusement of RHS. He has a lot of wise advice of his own, but one piece of advice that he wants to share with new and upcoming teachers and educators is to be confident in their practice and to voice the ideas and opinions that they have. Even if your suggestions do not come to reality or with immediate actions, your ideas will be helpful one way or the other. O’Connell advises RHS students to get involved and connected to our community!
In conclusion, Principal O’Connell’s arrival at Renton High School marks the beginning of a promising chapter for our beloved school. His dedication to creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment aligns perfectly with the school’s mission to empower every student. With his extensive experience of 19 years in the education field and unique innovative approach, Principal O’Connell is well equipped to address the challenges and opportunities ahead. The Renton High School community eagerly anticipates the positive impact he will have on students, staff, and the broader community, setting the stage for many years of growth and success!
