On the evening of June 5, 2024, a 17-year-old boy was shot outside the Big 5 Sporting Goods store on South Grady Way in Renton, Washington. According to the Renton Reporter and FOX 13 Seattle, the teen, Hazrat Ali Rohani, and two friends had gone to the store to return an airsoft or BB gun that was not working properly. As the group approached the store, Aaron Brown Myers, a 51-year-old Newcastle resident and off-duty security guard, confronted them in the parking lot after believing the teen was armed and preparing to commit a robbery. Court documents state Myers exited his vehicle, drew his firearm, and ordered the teens to stop. Rohani attempted to run away and was shot multiple times, later dying at the scene.
Investigators later said that Rohani was not armed with a real firearm, and the object Myers believed to be a gun was a replica airsoft weapon, according to the Kent Reporter and Renton Reporter. Prosecutors stated that surveillance footage and witness statements showed the teens were not threatening anyone and that Myers escalated the situation rather than retreating or contacting police. Myers was arrested and charged by King County prosecutors with second-degree murder and second-degree assault, both with firearm enhancements. He pleaded not guilty and was initially held on $2 million bail.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to issues surrounding vigilantism, the use of deadly force, and the risks of mistaking replica weapons for real firearms. At the center of this case is the loss of a young life, one that has deeply impacted family, friends, and the wider community. Many say the most meaningful response is to work toward a future where similar tragedies can be prevented. Legal experts make a note that Washington law places strict limits on the use of deadly force, and residents are encouraged to understand their rights and their responsibilities before choosing to carry a firearm.
