In late January 2026 Mark Fischbach, or more commonly known as the YouTube creator “Markiplier,” released his self-financed indie film Iron Lung, which is an adaptation of the indie game of the same name by creator David Szymanski. Originally intended for a small screening of 60 independent U.S. theaters, it grew to over 4,000 theaters internationally including major chain theaters such as AMC and Regal. With the success of the film, this movie has been able to break multiple records and set new benchmarks for film and possibly open doors for other indie filmmakers to have more opportunities. Both the film and the game follow a convict sent down and welded into a submarine and sent to a moon discovered to have an ocean of blood, with the promise of his freedom if he completes the task given to him. Both the film and the game explain how after humanity reached space and had working space fare, the “Quiet Rapture” occurs, where any planet containing human or biological life disappears, leaving behind only those on space stations and dying stars. The convict tries to complete the task given to him and tries to learn more about the mysteries surrounding this world.
Reportedly made with only 3 million dollars, the film has been written, directed, edited, produced, and stars Markiplier himself. The sci-fi psychological horror game Iron Lung released in 2022 and despite its minimalism of the game solely taking place within a submarine, it saw incredible success and popularity, a lot of it due to the coverage it got online from digital creators. In early 2023, Markiplier announced the film’s creation and David was heavily involved with the production of the film to help maintain creative vision. With the film following close to the games style of slow burn horror and taking place solely within the submarine, it can be seen as an odd choice for mainstream cinema. Despite this, the film has far outpaced expectations with its box office, influence, and reception.
On the film’s opening weekend, it was competing against Sam Raimi’s Send Help and the Melania documentary. On its opening weekend, the film grossed over $21 million dollars globally against a $3 million dollar budget and debuted to the #2 film in the U.S. The success has been able to reach multiple benchmarks throughout its time in production and release to the public. During filming, the film was able to break the record for the most amount of fake blood used in a film, with over 80,000 gallons being used. So far, the film has grossed over $50 million dollars, making it one of the most successful indie films of the past decade and making 7 times its budget. It also is competing for second highest screen indie movie at independent theaters, rivaling Passion of the Christ.
One of the reasons the film saw such a successful performance was because of Markipler’s pre-existing fanbase that he has built for over a decade. On YouTube, Markiplier has gained over 40 million subscribers and has built a strong relationship with his audience. This also isn’t his first venture into film, as Markiplier has also created multiple YouTube choose your own adventure film series such as In Space with Markiplier and Who Killed Markiplier. However, while those were produced with YouTube backing, Iron Lung was fully self-funded by Markiplier, originally expecting to not make back the money he put into the movie. This all goes to show how an audience will engage with something they feel personally invested in and how independent filmmakers don’t need Hollywood backing to achieve something. Due to fans contacting theaters and the engagement the film was getting online when its release was announced, this enabled the film to be shown in over 4,000 theaters globally.
Despite it being self-funded, Markiplier made sure not to cut corners during filming and made sure the crew was well taken care of. Many crew members have spoken about their experience during the filming and have talked about the positive environment, creative freedom, and the care Markiplier gave to them to make sure they were given the necessities they needed. In an interview with Dana Harris-Bridson, Markiplier commented on his experience working with the creative team, “A lot of what I’ve discovered is trusting the crew… the art department and the costume department, the makeup, and all the practical effects. I had this idea and then they just ran with it.”
As the theatrical run of Iron Lung comes to its end, its impact has been felt by Hollywood and has been able to challenge the preconceptions about the distribution, fan engagement, and cinema success today. It challenges the preconceived notions that theaters were a dying way of viewing film, and the success indie filmmaking can see outside of the online space.
