On February 22nd, 2026, the most-wanted cartel boss, Nemesio Oseguera (El Mencho), was killed after a government operation to capture him, sparking violence across Mexico. Oseguera was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which is considered one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the country and rivals other organizations outside of Mexico as well. Security officials explained how they were able to catch Oseguera at a news conference in Mexico City. The officials stated that they were able to find him by following his romantic partner to a cabin up in the mountains of his territory.
After his death, the people of Jalisco responded with violence, attacking security forces, blocking highways, and setting establishments and vehicles on fire. Most of the violence occurred in Guadalajara, Jalisco’s capitol, and Puerto Vallarta, a resort city in Jalisco state.
Mexico’s citizens and tourists struggle to find shelter and food as gangs are wreaking havoc on the streets and trapping them in.
Due to this sudden spike in violence, many airlines, namely United Airlines, Delta, American, and Alaska have cancelled and rescheduled their flights, leaving tourists stranded for days. Cruise ships planned to dock in Puerto Vallarta have cancelled their planned visits due to security concerns.
Fortunately, Mexican authorities have immediately taken action, trying to quickly restore the peace the day after Oseguera’s death. Yet even after things start to calm down, security concerns may still persist long after things return to normal, especially as the 2026 World Cup is scheduled to play in three cities in Mexico this summer.
