Interviewing Class of 2024 ASB Officers

Gavin Jenkins, Writer

With the recent ASB campaigns and elections going on around the school, a lot of people may be wondering what ASB is and how it is involved with the school. To gain more insight on the topic, I took the liberty of interviewing two class of 2024 ASB officers Evelyn Wong and Heidi Ngo about their experiences working in ASB.

The first question I asked the two officers was, “What is ASB?”. Evelyn explained that ASB stands for associated student body, the purpose of Renton’s ASB is to support the general welfare of students by organizing events and fundraisers and providing information about upcoming events and other school information via social media. Heidi added on to this, saying that it’s also a fun way to get more involved with and make an impact at school.

The second question I asked the two officers was, “What are the titles of each of your positions within our ASB?”. Heidi stated that she is the secretary of Renton’s ASB and Evelyn stated that she is the vice president of the class of 2024.

The third question I asked the two officers was, “How do each of your positions contribute to our ASB?”. Evelyn explained that as vice president, she helps set up fundraisers to raise money for events they have planned for the class of 2024 in the future. Heidi explained that as secretary, her job is to take notes during meetings to keep track of all the important ideas, dates, and other information discussed at each meeting.

The fourth question I asked the two officers was, “what challenges—if any—do the both of you face while working in ASB?”. Evelyn explained that the biggest challenge she faces while working in ASB is coming up with fun things they can do for the school that students would want to participate in. Heidi agreed, explaining that it’s very disheartening to review her notes after a meeting and see that they weren’t able to come up with any new ideas.

The fifth and final question I asked the two officers was, “What encouraged each of you to join ASB?”. Heidi stated that she was encouraged to join ASB because she wanted to be able to plan more school events this year as most of them had to be canceled because school was online last year. Evelyn stated that she was encouraged to join ASB because her older sister (a Renton High Alum) participated in ASB when she attended and Evelyn decided to follow in her footsteps.

I had a great time interviewing both of these special people and I hope anybody that took the time to read this learned something new about Renton’s ASB and some of the things they do for our school.
