Asian Hate Crimes

Lillian Pham, Writer

This past year has been crazy for everyone. COVID-19 has made all our past norms abnormal and has formed new norms we would’ve found unusual. But since then, the Asian community has been targeted all over the US. Recently, numbers have started to spike regarding hate crimes towards the Asian Community and have even happened in the greater Seattle area. So far there have been 10 reported hate crimes towards Asian Americans in the King County area. According to AP news, on March 23rd prosecutors in King County, Washington, charged Christopher Hamner with three counts of malicious harassment after police say he screamed profanities and threw things at cars in two incidents last week targeting women and children of Asian heritage. Asian Americans have ever since been walking in the streets frightened, having to think about if they are going to be targeted next. What should we do to stop it you ask? Stop normalizing racist jokes, harassment, and any sort of hate crimes towards Asians.
