Renton Swim is Dying

Renton Swim is Dying

Cameron Stadler, Journalist

Two months after Renton’s swim team’s season has ended, it is not looking good for our next season. In an interview with the co-captain of the swim team, Tristan Smalley, I asked the needed questions: why is our team so small, what does swimming mean to everyone, and how  do we bring our team to the championship?

The main reason the swim team has not had the best team size for a while is because of a stagnation in advertising.  When asked about it,  Tristan stated,  “I think that the way that swim team has tried to publicize themselves, it’s been really lacking in the last couple of years. So that, and with COVID as well, it has just gone into the ground”.  Tristan expressed that  the team mostly relies on each other to find new recruits, but of course COVID has only made that harder.

When asked about the lack of swimmers Tristan said “I’d say minimum 10 would be the best for us. Much less than that, and we start to not be able to do events and not be able to compete in relays; it just goes down from there.”  All we need is a minimum of 7 new swimmers to have a proper swim team to compete next year.

So why should you consider joining? “Well not only does the sport itself promote team values and bring the community together; but if you have any other sports that you need to stay in shape for during your off season, swimming is the perfect sport to try, since it is very low impact and has a very little chance of injury.”

Swimming is fading away as a sport in our current year, the team desperately needs just 7 new members. Hopefully, a small number of you all can change this and bring our team to new heights.
