Local Washington Summer Activities

Mia Foldvik, Journalist

Making summer plans can be challenging, especially as a teenager, so in this article, I will give you three not-so-typical summer activities right here in Washington! All of these activities are fun, easy to plan, and easy to actually accomplish.

The Renton Farmers Market is a classic Downtown Renton event. It’s the perfect opportunity for  community building with its signature slogan “meet me at the market.”

The farmers market will be located at the Renton Piazza in Downtown Renton, running every Tuesday from 3:00 pm-7:00 pm, June 6th to September 26th, giving us plenty of opportunities to stop by and enjoy what it has in store. But what exactly happens at the market? It’s mainly outdoor shopping from vendors, which are farmers selling their produce, processors selling food they have personally prepared, food vendors selling freshly made food, and crafters selling products they have made themselves. There will also be live entertainment featuring new performers every week. The market also has activities made for children, such as “Kid’s Patch” and “Kid’s Passport Program.” The market is also doing a program offering free gardening  advice to a community called “The Master Gardeners.” They are available to answer any gardening questions from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm every week. The Renton Farmers Market homepage says, “They’re available to help you manage your gardens and landscapes in a science-based, sustainable manner.” The DTR Farmers Market is a great place to hang out and go have fun this summer. Go with friends, family, or alone – you’ll still be with our Downtown community.

A photo I took of “Flamingo In The Tree” performing at The Vera Project.

The Vera Project is a live music and art venue located in Seattle Center. The Vera Project is probably my favorite place in all of Seattle because of its overflowing energy and kind community. I would describe it as one of the more popular underground places for live shows. It’s definitely something I recommend to people who are just starting out with attending live shows in Seattle. This venue really values safety for all ages. The Vera homepage describes itself as an “all-age nonprofit space dedicated to fostering personal and community transformation through collaborative, youth-driven engagement in music and art. A music venue, screen print shop,  recording studio, art gallery, and safe space for radical self-expression. VERA is a home to  Seattle’s creative community.”

The Vera Project is a great place to hang out and meet people with similar interests. It will open more doors to the underground Seattle music scene and is where you’ll start to meet the punks from the “Ask a punk for the address” posters.

Photo of the Seattle pride parade.

The Seattle pride parade has been a Washington tradition for 49 years now and has become a  huge community event. The Seattle Pride website says “The Seattle Pride® Parade is our opportunity to commemorate the past, celebrate new wins for equality, and get encouragement for the work yet to come. And quite frankly – it’s a hell of a lot of fun.”

With more than 300,000 people attending and 200+ groups in the actual parade, this makes it the largest parade in Washington. This year, it’ll be on Saturday, June 25th, starting at 4th Ave & Pike and ending at 2nd Ave & Denny Way, putting it right in the heart of Seattle. The parade is a great activity to do with friends, family, or anyone else that wants to go out and support the people of Seattle together.

With that, this brings us to the end of this article. I hope this article was able to give you some ideas and help you understand what Washington has to offer this summer.
