Running: The Mental and Physical Benefits

Matthew Guadiz, Journalist

Ever thought about running? Need some reasons to start? Well, there are many benefits to running that can transform your life no matter who you are.  Here are some examples of how running can bring brand-new benefits into your life.

Running or jogging is something that can range from doing huge marathons to simple sprinting. The difference is mainly the intensity, with running being more vigorous, while jogging being more lax. Either choice is a great way to get some exercise in order to keep a healthy body and healthy mind.

Of course, running by itself is obviously good for you physically, but how exactly? First off, because it is a weight-bearing exercise, it can naturally strengthen your skeletal system. Having a strong skeletal system means

fewer bones broken and we all want that for sure. Another example would be strengthening your muscles and cardiovascular health. This will make your heart work less while resting, and even reduce the chance of diseases that are associated with not having an active lifestyle, such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, and stroke.

Obviously, running can benefit you physically, but what about mentally?  Studies show regular running at both a moderate or vigorous pace can improve mental health, memory, and ability to learn. Running can be a great stress reliever as well, assisting with boosting morale and mood, giving way for a clear mind, and making your quality of life better overall. Quality sleep is something we all yearn for, and running actually can improve your sleep! It can trigger things in your body that you never thought existed.

Running can be seen as a regular exercise to become physically active, but there is so much more to running on the whole body. The mental benefits added on can be plenty in terms of gaining a healthy lifestyle or continuing to maintain such a life. Make sure to be safe while running and take it one step at a time.
